Objectives

A1. Research Objectives:

  • To identify best techniques for the OCR on desktop environments.
  • Compare the algorithms / techniques implemented in the last step in terms of accuracy and efficiency.
  • Based on the above objective, design implement the performance of top OCR algorithms on Android.
  • To evaluate the development environments of smart phones like Android in terms of ease of programming, support etc
  • To research on efficient implementation of computationally intensive tasks like character recognition on smart phones
  • To provide a platform that can be used for future research in the implementation of artificially intelligent softwares on the smart phones

A2. Academic Objectives:

  • To develop a center of excellence for the development of techniques and algorithms for advanced topics in mobile computing.
  • To provide an opportunity to MS/ PhD students to work on top notch products in the field of mobile computing and pattern recognition.

A3. Industrial Objectives:

  • To develop a framework / engine that can be a baseline for OCR related mobile applications like business card readers, mobile visual search engine, foreign language translation etc. We intend to make this framework open source to ensure widespread audience.

A4. Human Resource Development Objectives:

  • To develop a pool of researcher and developers that can work in the area of mobile computing and pattern recognition.

A5. Other Objectives:

  • To accelerate the development of novel software mobile phones in Pakistan. This thing is important in the sense that mobile applications development is a novel market and if Pakistan can become a center for it then it can help Pakistan economically as well. Just like South Korea is the leader in Wireless networks, India is the leader in general software development and US is number one in technology we believe that there is a lot of space in the mobile phones application development market which can be tapped by Pakistan.
